Nikon is ending its financial year at the end of the month, and the current batch of instants rebates on 18 Nikkor lenses will also end March 30, 2013. Unlike many recent Nikon promotions, the discount is not tied to the purchase of a new camera. You can save up to $350 per lens on many popular lenses.

Because of strong demand during the lens promotion, several popular lenses are backordered. If you order by March 30, you will lock in the low price and lenses will be delivered as stock becomes available.

Nikon Announces 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G VR Lens

Nikon-80-400mm-VR-lensMarch 5, 2013 — Nikon announces the ultra-telephoto zoom 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens. This long telephoto option for full frame cameras delivers outstanding performance for the latest high megapixel Nikon FX-format digital cameras. Its long reach offers 5X zoom capabilities in a compact package. The lens can be combined with a 1.4X teleconverter on the latest Nikon DSLR including the D4, D800/D800E, D600 and D7100 DSLR to allow up to 560mm reach at f/8 with full auto focus capabilities. The DX-format D7100 provides additional magnification to 35mm equivalent 600mm without and 840mm with the 1.4X teleconverter.

Nikon 80-400mm VR Lens Diagram The lens incorporates the latest VR technology, providing up to four stops of additional stabilization without the use of a tripod. It uses Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast auto focus operation. Internally, the 20 elements are arranged into 12 groups. Four regular ED glass elements and one Super ED glass element provide sharp images in the most demanding conditions. The 80-400mm also features Nikon’s signature Nano Crystal Coat to reduce flare and ghosting when shot into bright light sources.

Nikon is dropping lens prices up to $350 on popular Nikkor lenses for a limited time. Unlike previous offers, there is no camera purchase required. These lens discounts will not lost long are set to expire on March 2, 2013 Update: Extended through March 30, 2013.

Of the 18 lenses on discount, 14 are full frame FX-format lenses. They include professional-grade f/2.8 zoom lenses: $200 off the 24-70mm f/2.8G and $300 off the 70-200mm f/2.8G VRII zoom.

DxO Rates Nikon Nikkor 85mm 1.8G Highest of All 85mm Lenses Tested


DxO Labs has published their full review on the Nikon NIKKOR 85mm 1.8G AF-S lens. The lens produced the highest score of all 14 85mm prime lens the lab has tested to date. This $499 lens achieves sharpness rivaling the $1699 Nikon 85mm 1.4G, while producing minimal distortion (0.1%) and extremely low chromatic aberration (4um). It’s main shortcoming is vignetting at maximum aperture.

Those seeking maximum subject isolation and a professional build quality may prefer the 85mm 1.4G, however given its outstanding performance at a relatively bargain price, the 85mm 1.8G is the go-lens for portraiture and low-light photography for any full-frame photographer on a budget. It’s small size and low 12.4 oz weight also make it a preferred medium-telephoto choice for travel and backpacking.

Nikon Announces 70-200mm f4 G ED VR Telephoto Zoom Lens


Nikon announces the latest F4 constant aperture zoom lens, the NIKKOR 70-200mm F/4 ED VR telephoto zoom. The lens features the familiar focal length that is popular with full-frame photographers with the latest third-generation VR stabilization technology.

The lens provides enthusiasts and professionals outstanding sharpness and contrast for the latest FX cameras including the D4, D800 and D600. These cameras can use Nikon’s teleconverters to increase focal length up to 400mm, and take advantage of autofocus using cross-type sensors available at F8.

The 70-200mm F4 VR lens offers a 2.9X zoom range with constant aperture F4 throughout. Minimum focus distance is 3.28 feet and maximum reproduction ratio is 0.274X. The lens features 20 elements in 14 groups and incorporates Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat to reduce the appearance of internal ghosting and flaring when photographing bright light sources. It uses a 67mm filter size. The lens has internal AF-S focusing with Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor to reduce noise while shooting video and provide outstanding focus speed. The lens also provides instant manual focus override in M/A mode.

Dimensions are 3.1 inch diameter and 7 inch length. Weight is approximately 30 oz (850g). The lens includes 67mm lens cap, HB-60 hood, LF-4 rear lens cap and CL-1225 semi-soft case. An optional lens collar with foot RT-1 is available at $233.95 US retail.
